Art of the Northwest Coast
Dorothy Grant produces wearable art that draws from the traditions of northern two-dimensional form line painting and button blankets. The silkscreened image on the bodice of this dress depicts Raven as the transformer holding the circular Earth in his human hands as well as his beak. Raven is represented with two confronting profiles that create a frontal, downward-pointing head, with feathers on either side. To go with the dress, Grant commissioned the Salish-inspired headdress by Marianne Jones, which is made from dentalium shells, beads, and mother-of-pearl.
